The Lagos State branch of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a warning to Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State and the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, urging him not to politicise philanthropic acts—specifically referring to the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s call for donations toward the National Library during her birthday.
Responding to Obi’s remarks, the APC’s Lagos State spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, stated on Monday that public institutions across the globe regularly benefit from private donations and endowments, which serve to complement government efforts in building a nation.
He explained that contributions of this nature should be welcomed, as they demonstrate a collective sense of responsibility in strengthening public institutions.
Oladejo encouraged Nigerians to perceive the First Lady’s donation appeal as a commendable move aimed at supporting education and national progress, rather than viewing it through a political filter.
He stressed that the main focus should be on reinforcing national institutions and cultivating a culture of collaboration between the public and private sectors for the benefit of the entire country.
