Maryamu Idris, the Managing Director of NNPC Trading Limited, has now been officially named as Nigeria’s National Representative to the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
This new appointment places her at the centre of both domestic oil administration and international energy policy formulation.
In a post published on its official Facebook page, NNPC extended its congratulations to Maryamu Idris on her new role.
“We congratulate Maryamu Idris, Managing Director of NNPC Trading Limited, on her appointment as the National Representative for Nigeria at the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC),” NNPC stated.
In her dual positions, Maryamu Idris will play an important role in influencing both national and global energy policies. While she continues to lead NNPC Trading Limited, she will also serve as Nigeria’s primary technical liaison within OPEC, representing the country on the international platform.
As part of her duties, she will serve as a member of OPEC’s Economic Commission Board (ECB), where she will participate in technical discussions and contribute to the development of policy recommendations.
Her role will also involve regular coordination with the OPEC Governor and other national stakeholders, including NNPC Limited, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, to ensure that Nigeria’s energy interests are well-represented and in line with OPEC’s wider goals.
Maryamu earned a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Economics from the University of Abuja, Nigeria, and a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Energy Economics from the University of Dundee in Scotland, United Kingdom.
Her professional journey spans over 20 years within Nigeria’s vital oil and gas sector. She began her career at the Bureau of Public Enterprises in 1999 as an Enterprise Officer, and later joined the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative in 2006, where she worked as a Petroleum Economist and Trust Fund Adviser until 2009, contributing to efforts aimed at promoting transparency in the oil industry.
Subsequently, she joined NNPC and progressed through several roles within the Crude Oil Marketing Division. From 2014 to 2017, she served as Supervisor of Market Research; from 2018 to 2020, she was Deputy Manager of Pricing and Performance; and from 2021 to 2022, she held the position of Manager of Pricing and Valuation.
At NNPC Trading Limited, she was appointed Executive Director of Crude and Condensate between 2022 and 2024 and Executive Director of Planning and Commercial between 2024 and 2025 before becoming Managing Director in April 2025.
