The Rivers State branch of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has instructed its workforce across the 23 local government councils to commence a seven-day warning industrial action.
The union’s state president, Clifford Paul, disclosed that the strike would take effect from midnight on Tuesday, 30th September 2025.
This directive was communicated via a circular released on Monday by the State Secretary, Sunday Adeniran, and addressed to all state officers and chairpersons of the union's branches in the 23 local councils.
As stated in the circular, all employees working in local governments across the state have been ordered to immediately cease work until further notice.
According to the union, the move became necessary following what it termed the “callous and unfair” action taken by Chidi Lloyd, Chairman of Emohua Local Government Area, who is accused of withholding the salaries of some union members.
During his initial tenure, Lloyd reportedly dismissed more than 300 staff members in the LGA, alleging that they were ghost workers.
However, after his tenure ended, Governor Siminalayi Fubara instructed that the affected staff should be reinstated and fully paid, while questioning the authority under which the council chairman had acted.
Upon resuming a second term in office, Lloyd allegedly repeated the same action, terminating the employment of 300 staff once again.
In response, the NULGE state president cautioned that if, at the conclusion of the seven-day warning strike, the chairman fails to pay the outstanding wages to the over 300 affected employees, the union will escalate the protest into a full-blown, indefinite strike. He stressed that “an injury to one is an injury to all.”
