Niger Delta activist Ann-Kio Briggs has called for transparency regarding the terms of the agreement reached between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and President Bola Tinubu before the conclusion of the six-month emergency rule in Rivers State.
During an appearance on Sunday Politics, a programme on Channels Television, Briggs asserted that the citizens of the state are entitled to know what was discussed privately, warning that a lack of transparency might undermine the governor’s credibility.
“We are the people who have paid the greatest price in all of these things, and to not be aware of the decision which will affect us, and therefore, we can’t gauge the extent to which these decisions will affect us, it becomes challenging to flow with the politicians,” she said.
She added that withholding the specifics of the deal was “unacceptable” to residents of the riverine communities, where Governor Fubara originates.
“It’s just an impossible situation where we have found ourselves. We don’t know what the President has insisted on, we don’t know what was agreed upon, and where that leads the people of Rivers State. So, we need to know what was agreed on,” she stressed.
Briggs also aligned with those demanding that Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), who acted as the sole administrator during the emergency period, provide an account of how public funds were utilised under his administration.
“The state funds spent during the emergency rule belonged to the people of the state and should be accounted for,” she said.
Governor Fubara resumed his official duties on 17 September 2025, after the emergency rule was lifted by President Tinubu. He was welcomed at the Government House in Port Harcourt by his wife, senior security officials, and key stakeholders before proceeding to inspect his residence and resume official functions.
Governor Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly had been suspended from office on 18 March 2025, following President Tinubu’s declaration of emergency rule in response to political unrest in the state.
