The Senate has deferred its scheduled return to plenary sittings by two weeks, shifting the original date from Tuesday, 23rd September, to Tuesday, 7th October, 2025.
Previously, the Senate had gone on its annual recess on 24th July, 2025, and was expected to reconvene today.
In a message directed to the lawmakers, the Chief of Staff to the President of the Senate, Chinedu Akubueze, disclosed the rescheduling. However, no formal explanation was provided for the change.
While noting the postponement, Akubueze conveyed his regrets and encouraged senators to take note of the new date and adjust their plans accordingly.
The statement partly read: “This is to respectfully inform Distinguished Senators that the resumption of plenary sitting of the Senate, earlier scheduled for Tuesday, 23rd September, 2025, has been shifted to Tuesday, 7th October, 2025. Any inconvenience this short notice may cause is deeply regretted. Distinguished Senators are kindly invited to note the postponement and adjust their schedules accordingly. Thank you for your kind understanding, and God bless.”
It is worth mentioning that the notice was issued by the Chief of Staff to the Senate President rather than the Clerk of the Senate, who is usually responsible for such communications.
It should also be noted that the National Assembly Service Commission, just last week, confirmed the appointment of Emmanuel Odo as the Acting Clerk of the Senate. His appointment was officially approved on Tuesday, 16th September, 2025, during the 10th meeting of the 6th Commission.
