The verdict, delivered by Justice I.O. Harrison of the Lagos State High Court, ruled in her favour in suit no. LD/177818MFHR/2024, reaffirming her constitutional right to privacy as recognised under Nigerian law.
According to a copy of the court document, the case was titled “In the Matter of an Application by Adunni Adewale for the Enforcement of Her Fundamental Human Right to Privacy as Guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999.”
The lawsuit, which commenced in January 2023, followed a story published on NaijaNews.com with the headline “Six Popular Nigerian Actresses Who Have Been Accused of Dating Dino Melaye”. The actress was listed among those said to be romantically linked to the politician.
Adunni Ade insisted the report was “false, misleading, and offensive”, arguing it misrepresented her personal life and infringed upon her right to privacy. She stated that the publication caused her emotional suffering and was released without her consent purely to attract online traffic.
In an Instagram post on Tuesday announcing her legal victory, Ade wrote, “I won my case — a false story was published about me, but truth stood tall. This judgement reaffirms that privacy matters — and so does integrity. Justice delayed isn’t justice denied.”
The actress went on to thank her legal representatives, saying, “Many thanks to my lawyer! You worked tirelessly on this case. Olumide Babalola LP — two cases won, a few more to go.”
She also alluded to other ongoing defamation cases, adding, “You who are running up and down avoiding court papers, please stand still so you can be served.”
Additionally, Adunni appeared to address an unnamed fellow actress, saying, “And to you, my fellow actress who told a false story to the Cutie Jules, don’t worry; very soon the world will know the kind of snake you are. Envy and bitterness live and breathe in you. You are deadly! You must have forgotten what you showed me in my room.”
In its preliminary remarks, the court explained that although the judgment came beyond the constitutionally prescribed three-month period, the delay was due to the disruptions caused by the #EndSARS protests, which impacted court proceedings in Lagos.
Justice Harrison clarified that despite the delay, the court was “fully abreast of the facts and issues raised in the case” and assured that “neither party will suffer a miscarriage of justice by reason thereof.”
The ruling represents a notable win for Adunni Ade, who characterised the outcome as a reaffirmation of “truth and integrity” in defending her right to privacy against false online narratives.
