Godswill Akpabio Swears In Ikpea, Nwachukwu As New Senators.

NASS.

The Senate, on Wednesday, officially administered the oath of office to two newly elected senators: Joseph Ikpea of the All Progressives Congress (APC), representing Edo Central, and Emmanuel Nwachukwu of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), representing Anambra South.

Their inauguration followed the bye-elections organised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to fill vacant positions in the respective Senatorial Districts.

It will be recalled that INEC had declared the Edo Central Senatorial seat vacant after the previous holder, Senator Monday Okpebholo, emerged as the Governor of the state, leading to Ikpea’s emergence as his replacement.

Meanwhile, the passing of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who formerly represented Anambra South, necessitated another bye-election, which saw participation from 12 political parties on 16 August.

Following these developments, the composition of the Senate now stands at 71 Senators for the APC, 28 for the PDP, 5 for the Labour Party (LP), 1 for the NNPP, 2 for the SDP, and 2 for APGA, bringing the total to 109.

The Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, administered the oath of office and allegiance to both Ikpea and Nwachukwu during the Thursday plenary session.

During the ceremony, the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, congratulated the new members and welcomed them, stating that the Senate represents the most elite political assembly in the world.

He encouraged them to stay committed to their responsibilities and focus on actions that will benefit the country, reminding them that they now serve as Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, beyond the identities of their political parties.

Akpabio further advised them to thoroughly study the 1999 Constitution and the amended Senate Standing Orders of 2023.

Dignitaries who attended the swearing-in included former Governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori; former Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shuaibu; Lee Ikpea; Samson Osagie; and others.

The Senate President, while appreciating their presence, jokingly added, “Including the women so that they will not say that I do not like women.”
