Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused the Federal Government of inflating the cost of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway project.
Atiku, who made the statement on Wednesday, also urged that the project undergo an independent value-for-money audit.
He further called for a suspension of all payments until Nigerians were satisfied that the project genuinely served the national interest.
In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku recalled that when the Tinubu administration launched the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, he had raised concerns that the cost was outrageously inflated to N8 billion per kilometre.
He noted that the Minister of Works, David Umahi, had at that time refuted the claim, asserting that the cost was around N4 billion instead of N8 billion.
However, according to Atiku, the same minister has now backtracked and acknowledged that the real cost is closer to N8 billion per kilometre—exactly what he had warned about.
“This admission not only vindicates the former vice president’s position but also exposes the Tinubu administration’s lack of transparency in managing one of the most expensive infrastructure projects in Nigeria’s history,” the statement said.
