Zamfara State has reported 179 deaths resulting from 12,052 suspected cases of cholera, amounting to a 1.4 percent fatality rate, which is lower than the national average of 3.3 percent.

The Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Mohammad Nakwada, made this known during a meeting with the State Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC), which was led by the Commissioner for Health, Dr Nafisa Muhammad Maradun.

He stated that the figures demonstrate the state’s strengthened response to the cholera outbreak across all 14 local government areas.

The State Epidemiologist, Dr Ahmad Muhammad Gusau, noted that data from the National Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) indicated Zamfara’s fatality rate remained lower than that of most states, despite recording a high number of suspected cases.

He credited the improvement to successful case management techniques, the activation of Rapid Response Teams, proactive surveillance, and the creation of Cholera Treatment Centres and Oral Dehydration Points throughout the state.

The Secretary to the State Government called on health workers to maintain their efforts to curb the spread of the disease, stressing that every case represents a life in danger.
