Council Of State Approves Prof. Amupitan As New INEC Chairman.

The National Council of State has given its approval to the nomination of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, from the North-Central region, to assume the role of Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In a statement released by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, it was revealed that President Bola Tinubu put forward Amupitan’s name to replace Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure ended in October 2025 after serving since 2015.

The statement noted that President Tinubu informed the council that Amupitan, who hails from Kogi State in the North-Central, is the first individual from the state to be nominated for the INEC chairmanship and that he is “apolitical”.

“Council members unanimously supported the nomination, with Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo describing Amupitan as a man of integrity.”

“In compliance with the constitution, President Tinubu will now send Amupitan’s name to the Senate for screening,” it continued.

Professor Amupitan, aged 58, is from Ayetoro Gbede in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State. He is currently a Professor of Law at the University of Jos, Plateau State, where he also earned his degrees.

His areas of specialisation include Company Law, Law of Evidence, Corporate Governance, and Privatisation Law. He attained the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in September 2014.

Amupitan was born on 25 April 1967.

He completed his primary and secondary education before attending Kwara State Polytechnic in Ilorin from 1982 to 1984. He then proceeded to the University of Jos from 1984 to 1987 and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1988.

He obtained his Master of Laws degree (LLM) from the University of Jos in 1993 and completed his PhD in 2007. His academic career began in 1989, following his National Youth Service year at the Bauchi State Publishing Corporation from 1988 to 1989.

He currently serves as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos. He is also the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council at Joseph Ayo Babalola University in Osun State.

His previous roles at the University of Jos include Chairman of the Committee of Deans and Directors (2012–2014), Dean of the Faculty of Law (2008–2014), and Head of the Department of Public Law (2006–2008).

Outside academia, Amupitan has served in several significant roles. He is a board member of Integrated Dairies Limited in Vom and has served on the Governing Council of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies. He was also a member of the Council of Legal Education from 2008 to 2014 and a board member of Riss Oil Limited, Abuja, from 1996 to 2004.

Professor Amupitan has authored numerous legal publications, including Corporate Governance: Models and Principles (2008), Documentary Evidence in Nigeria (2008), Evidence Law: Theory and Practice in Nigeria (2013), Principles of Company Law (2013), and An Introduction to the Law of Trust in Nigeria (2014).

He is married and has four children.
