Senator Kelvin Chukwu, who represents Enugu East, officially left the Labour Party (LP) on Tuesday and joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
His defection was made public during the Senate’s plenary session by the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
Senator Chukwu explained that his reason for switching parties was due to what he called the breakdown of internal democracy and the disorganised state of the LP.
In his comments, Akpabio congratulated Chukwu and remarked that Nigeria would not become a one-party state, as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would continue to register more political parties.
Following this defection, the APC now has 73 senators, the PDP holds 28, the LP has 4, the NNPP has 1, the SDP holds 1, and the APGA has 2, making up the total of 109 senators.
