Governor Lawal Under Pressure As APC Expands Influence In Zamfara.

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, is facing growing political pressure following a fresh series of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC, further undermining his political strength ahead of the 2027 general election.

Sources within the Government House in Gusau disclosed that the governor plans to embark on extensive consultations in Abuja to address the escalating crisis within the PDP and restore his grip on the party.

Political observers believe Lawal’s planned Abuja meetings are part of broader moves to manage the ongoing turmoil and secure political backing as the APC continues to consolidate its dominance in Zamfara State.

The wave of defections, which has unsettled the PDP in the state, includes prominent political figures such as legislators, ward leaders, and former aides, who have accused the governor of poor governance, neglecting loyal party members, and failing to fulfil campaign promises.

On Tuesday, Hon. Maharazu Salisu, who represents Maradun II Constituency in the Zamfara State House of Assembly, officially defected to the APC at the party’s state headquarters in Gusau.

His defection, alongside that of five PDP ward executives, represents yet another major blow to Governor Lawal, whose influence within the party continues to wane.

The governor’s troubles deepened last week when a PDP candidate he reportedly backed with over ₦4 billion during a by-election also defected to the APC, citing disappointment over the administration’s performance and growing public dissatisfaction.

The APC currently controls 13 out of the 24 seats in the Zamfara State House of Assembly, while reports suggest that seven more PDP lawmakers may soon cross over — a situation that could leave Governor Lawal with only four loyal members and expose him to impeachment risks.

Insiders revealed that the governor held a late-night meeting with some lawmakers on Monday, where he reportedly voiced concern over the spate of defections and their possible consequences on his political future.

According to one source, the governor admitted he might “explore international options” if forced out of office, making reference to properties he allegedly owns in London, Dubai, the United States, and Germany.

Meanwhile, the Northern APC Stakeholders Forum has advised the party’s national leadership against admitting Governor Lawal into the APC, warning that his record in office could tarnish the party’s image in the region.

In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Alhaji Mubarak Liman, the group accused Lawal of presiding over one of the most challenging periods in Zamfara’s history, marked by insecurity and infrastructural decline.

“Governor Dauda Lawal has failed in critical areas of governance — security, infrastructure, and welfare. Welcoming him into the APC would be counterproductive for the party in Zamfara and the North-West,” the statement read.

The forum further stated that the consistent defections from the PDP highlight the governor’s diminishing popularity and weakening support at the grassroots level.
