The Presidency has stated that the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, must exhibit courage, independence, and transparency to rebuild public confidence in the electoral body, which it said had “wavered” in recent years.
This was revealed by the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, in a statement titled ‘INEC Chairman: Making a Difference — A Choice Unanimous’ issued on Friday in Abuja.
Dare explained that Amupitan’s appointment marked a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey, adding that it represented a rare level of agreement among political and civic stakeholders.
He noted that the new INEC chairman’s vast experience in academia, corporate governance, and public administration positioned him to guide the Commission through a crucial phase aimed at restoring confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.
“In every democracy, the integrity of elections rests squarely on the shoulders of its electoral umpire,” Dare said.
The presidential aide further stressed that reforming INEC and ensuring that elections genuinely reflected the people’s will would require not only administrative competence but also moral courage and a deep commitment to fairness.
He also urged INEC to prioritise digital voter education and civic awareness campaigns to revive young Nigerians’ faith in elections as credible instruments of change.
According to Dare, President Tinubu’s selection of Amupitan showed a clear intention to strengthen democratic institutions and restore trust in electoral governance.
He therefore called on the new INEC chairman to embrace the responsibility before him and lead with integrity and vision.
The National Council of State had on Thursday unanimously approved the appointment of the Kogi-born professor of law to replace Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose ten-year tenure as INEC Chairman ended on Tuesday.
During the meeting at the Council Chambers of the State House, Abuja, President Bola Tinubu explained that his decision to appoint Amupitan was based on the latter’s non-partisan nature, integrity, and outstanding record of service.
