IPAC Calls for Independent Panel, Not Presidency, to Appoint INEC Officials.

The Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC, has called for the power to appoint the chairman, commissioners, and secretary of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to be moved from the presidency to an independent panel.

IPAC’s National Chairman, Yusuf Dantalle, made this demand during a session organised by the House of Representatives Committee on Constitutional Review, held for leaders of political parties in Abuja.

According to him, such a change would help ensure INEC’s independence and build greater public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system.

He explained that under the proposed arrangement, an independent appointment committee, IAC, would be created. This panel would include representatives from all registered political parties, civil society groups, the National Judicial Council, NJC, and a joint committee of the national assembly, consisting of members from both the majority and minority caucuses in the Senate and House of Representatives.

Dantalle further recommended that the state independent electoral commissions, SIECs, be dissolved, and that the responsibility for conducting all local government area elections be transferred to INEC.

“IPAC has been championing local government autonomy. Politics is local, and citizens should be encouraged to participate in grassroots politics that actively guarantee free, fair and credible local government elections,” he said.

Dantalle also called for the reinstatement of funding for political parties to help “provide a level playing ground for all political parties.”
