A mild drama unfolded at the National Assembly on Wednesday when officials of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) walked out during a meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies.
The JAMB Registrar, Prof Ishaq Oloyede, was not present at the session and had delegated a Director, Mufutau Bello, to represent him.
Tension arose when Bello insisted that journalists leave the meeting room, claiming that the documents he was about to present contained sensitive information.
However, the Committee refused the request, stating that its proceedings were public and that it had constitutional authority to determine how its sessions were conducted.
In a sudden and dramatic move, the JAMB representative became visibly upset, instructed his team to leave, and walked out of the meeting, leaving lawmakers astonished.
Angered by the action, the Committee directed the Sergeant-at-Arms to apprehend the JAMB officials, but they had already exited the building.
The Committee has now ordered JAMB to ensure that the Registrar appears in person with his management team by Tuesday next week to present all required documents.
It also warned that failure to comply with the directive could result in the issuance of a warrant of arrest.
