The All Progressives Congress (APC) has attained a two-thirds majority in the House of Representatives following the defection of six opposition lawmakers on Thursday.
Five lawmakers from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) representing the South-East region and one from the Labour Party (LP) in Plateau State switched allegiance to the APC during Thursday’s plenary session.
Those who defected include Daniel Asama Ado (Plateau), Chidi Mark Obetta (Enugu), Phillips Anayo Owuegbu (Enugu), Nnaji Nnolim (Enugu), Denis Agbo (Enugu), and Matthew Nwogu (Imo).
With the addition of these six members, the APC now holds 242 seats in the House, while the PDP’s representation has reduced to 74.
Reading their letters of defection on the floor of the House, Speaker Abbas Tajudeen stated that all six lawmakers attributed their decision to unresolved leadership disputes within their former parties.
The defection event was attended by notable figures, including the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda; the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah; and former Minister of Defence, Fedelia Njeze, among others.
