The Kano State Government has instructed the State Hisba Board to begin arrangements for the marriage of no fewer than 2,000 couples under its mass wedding initiative.
Deputy Commander-General of the board, Sheikh Mujahid Aminudeen, revealed in a telephone interview on Thursday that preparations would soon commence to ensure the event's success.
“We are planning to conduct a mass wedding of another batch of 2,000 couples as directed by the state government under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf,” he said.
Although the Commander-General did not provide a specific date for the major event, he explained that there are established procedures to be followed for the marriage process.
He stated that all intending couples who have registered must undergo medical examinations to determine their health status, including tests for HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, genotype compatibility, and drug use, among others.
“All prospective couples interested in the wedding must register before participating in the state-planned mass wedding.
The medical screening is also part of the prerequisite arrangement of the mass wedding proceedings, and it’s compulsory because anybody who fails to present himself or herself for the screening will be automatically disqualified,” he said.
The administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf reinstated the mass wedding programme as part of efforts to assist girls and women, particularly widows, divorcees, and spinsters whose parents are unable to afford the cost or preparations required for marriage.
The return of the mass wedding programme in Kano State is also intended to reduce prostitution and other social issues, especially among divorcees, widows, and unmarried women in the state
