The Lagos State Government has offered clarification regarding the arrest of a woman by officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, LAGESC/KAI, for cooking on a road median in the Admiralty area of Lekki Phase 1.
In a statement from the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab explained that the woman’s action breached environmental and sanitation laws that govern the proper use of public spaces across the state.
The ministry noted that the woman claimed she was preparing food as part of a charity effort. However, officials maintained that while the government supports charitable initiatives, such actions must be carried out in line with environmental regulations to maintain safety, hygiene, and public order.
“The Lagos State Government appreciates the goodwill and community support demonstrated by residents,” the statement read. “Nonetheless, all charitable activities must comply with existing laws designed to protect public infrastructure and maintain urban discipline.”
The ministry reaffirmed the administration’s commitment under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to ensuring a clean, sustainable, and well-ordered environment for everyone in Lagos.
It further highlighted that using public structures such as road medians for personal, business, or social purposes is completely prohibited because it endangers lives, damages public property, and disrupts the movement of traffic.
The government stated that the enforcement operation, which led to the woman’s arrest and the confiscation of her cooking utensils, was part of the ongoing #KeepLagosClean and #ZeroToleranceLagos campaigns created to protect the city’s beauty and functionality.
Residents and charitable organisations were also encouraged to seek proper authorisation and make use of approved venues for public or social activities.
