PETER MBA'S DEFECTION: PDP Face Challenges But Remains Strong — Ologunagba.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Debo Ologunagba, has dismissed the impact of Governor Peter Mbah’s defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that the PDP’s real strength lies with the people rather than the governors.

Ologunagba, however, admitted that the party is currently facing some challenges, some of which he blamed on external influences.

On Tuesday, Governor Mbah and members of his cabinet officially defected from the PDP to the APC.

Mbah’s switch to the ruling party marks the latest in a series of defections by PDP governors this year.

Earlier in the year, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno had also joined the APC in April and June, respectively.

Both governors had cited internal crises within the PDP and the desire to align their states with the Federal Capital Territory as reasons for their defections.

Speaking on Arise Television’s programme, ‘Prime Time’, just hours after Mbah’s defection, Ologunagba asserted that such defections by governors do not necessarily weaken the PDP.

According to him, the party’s foundation and resilience are rooted in the support of the people rather than individual officeholders.

He said, “The PDP is not in a coma, it’s not in a vegetative state, yes, we have challenges, some of which are external, more damages are the ones within, but again, we are working that rope surely towards convention.”

The PDP spokesman argued that the wave of defections was being driven by the APC through various manipulative tactics.

He said, “What we see today, people are not defecting because of policies, programmes of ideology. People are defecting because of personal interest, inducement, intimidation and coercion.”

Ologunagba further alleged that the APC was behind the ongoing defections in a bid to weaken the PDP ahead of its forthcoming national convention scheduled for November in Ibadan.

Despite the current challenges, he expressed confidence that the PDP would overcome its difficulties and emerge stronger in the coming months.

He concluded by emphasising that the PDP’s true strength, with or without governors, would be evident in the 2027 general election.
