The #JusticeForOchanya campaign has resurfaced across social media in Nigeria, seven years after the death of 13-year-old Ochanya Ogbanje.

Ochanya, a native of Benue State, died in October 2018 after reportedly suffering years of sexual and physical abuse.
Her tragic story gained national attention because of the serious damage the abuse caused to her health.

Once again, Nigerians on social media have revived the #JusticeForOchanya campaign, seven years after the death of 13-year-old Ochanya Ogbanje from Benue State, who allegedly endured prolonged abuse.

Ochanya’s story first became widely known in October 2018 when reports linked her worsening health to continuous sexual and physical abuse. She was allegedly abused by a university lecturer, Andrew Ogbuja, and his son, Victor Ogbuja, leading to national outrage and calls for justice.

Despite widespread public interest, the case has continued for years without a clear resolution. This ongoing delay has sparked renewed anger among citizens and activists, prompting fresh calls for accountability and reform in the justice system.

Advocacy and human rights organisations have noted that the renewed campaign is not only about obtaining justice for Ochanya but also about ensuring the protection of other young girls from similar abuse and improving Nigeria’s child protection laws.

Across X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and Facebook, Nigerians have expressed deep frustration over the slow pace of the case, while celebrities, social media influencers, and ordinary citizens are using their voices to push for urgent legal reforms and justice.

As the #JusticeForOchanya campaign gains renewed strength, many supporters remain hopeful that her case will finally reach a fair conclusion and that it will inspire tougher actions to safeguard vulnerable children across the nation.
