NMA Confirms Nnamdi Kanu’s Health Stable For Trial.

A medical panel set up by the President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has concluded that the health condition of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, is stable and not life-threatening.

The panel was constituted on the order of Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja during the ongoing terrorism trial to provide an independent assessment of Kanu’s health status, following conflicting medical opinions from experts representing both the prosecution and the defence.

In its report, submitted to the court on October 13 by the prosecution counsel led by Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) and partly read during Thursday’s sitting, the medical team stated that Kanu’s ailment posed no serious danger to his life.

The panel affirmed that Kanu is medically fit to continue with his trial.

Relying on the findings in the report and in the absence of objections from both legal teams, Justice Omotosho ruled that the defendant was well enough to proceed with the case.

The judge thereafter granted the defendant six consecutive days, starting from October 23, to present and conclude his defence.

Justice Omotosho also approved an oral motion made by Kanu’s counsel, Kanu Agabi (SAN), requesting permission for the defence team to meet privately with the defendant outside the premises of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Agabi told the court that the defence was concerned that discussions held within the DSS facility might be monitored or recorded.

Granting the request, Justice Omotosho ordered that the private meeting take place inside the courtroom, with only Kanu and his legal representatives present.

According to the court’s order, the private consultation will be held between 9 a.m. and 12 noon on October 22, while the trial is scheduled to continue the following day, October 23.
