The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Monday announced significant reforms for the judiciary in Abuja, pledging to end the practice of judges residing in rented accommodation while also initiating the digitisation of the FCT High Courts’ operations.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony for the construction of official residences for Heads of Courts in the FCT, Wike described the project as the most crucial undertaking under the current administration’s infrastructure agenda.
“We cannot afford to continue to see judges living in rented houses, sometimes squatting with relatives. By the end of President Tinubu’s first tenure, no judge of the FCT High Court will be living in rented quarters,” Wike declared.
He revealed that the administration plans to provide 10 duplexes each for the Court of Appeal and the Federal High Court, and 20 for the FCT High Court.
The minister further emphasised that the houses would remain the personal property of the beneficiaries after retirement, rather than reverting to government ownership.
“This is a policy of Mr President. When judges retire, they must go home to their houses. Nobody will reclaim them. That is the true position,” he stated.
Wike also disclosed that funds for the digitisation of the FCT High Court had been included in the 2025 budget, with immediate implementation expected.
“I have directed that the digitisation project commence without delay. Our judges deserve the best working environment to serve justice effectively,” he said, commending the Attorney General of the Federation for supporting the programme.
He cautioned contractors against any form of delay or variation in the execution of the project, stressing that the buildings must be completed within 12 months and handed over to the judiciary.
Earlier, the FCT Minister of State, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, remarked that the initiative demonstrates the government’s resolve to strengthen the justice system in the capital city.
“This is about honour, dignity and institutional pride; providing befitting residences for our Heads of Courts whose wisdom upholds the rule of law,” she said, commending President Tinubu’s vision and Wike’s leadership.
