The case was lodged at the High Court of Anambra State, sitting in Onitsha.
Back in August, Obi had threatened to take legal action against Adeyanju for alleged defamation.
The threat came after Adeyanju sued one of Obi’s aides, Serah Ibrahim, accusing her of defaming his wife.
In response to Obi’s demand notice, Adeyanju took to Facebook to mock the legal warning.
Adeyanju, who has consistently criticised Peter Obi, has repeatedly maintained that the former governor would never become Nigeria’s president.
He has also had numerous clashes with Obi’s supporters, known as Obidients, over his online remarks.
In the new suit, Obi is requesting several declaratory and injunctive orders against Adeyanju for allegedly publishing “false, baseless, unfounded, malicious, reckless, scandalous, and defamatory” statements about him across various social media platforms.
The writ of summons, dated October 3 and addressed to Adeyanju at D4 Makuru Close, Wuse II, Abuja, instructs him to enter an appearance within 42 days of receiving the notice or face a possible default judgment.
According to the endorsement on the writ, Obi is asking the court to declare that Adeyanju’s publications on his verified social media pages — including X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram — are defamatory and damaging to his reputation.
The former governor is also asking for a court order compelling Adeyanju to issue a full and unreserved apology on all his social media pages, as well as in at least three national newspapers and major broadcast platforms such as Channels TV, TVC News, and Arise News.
Obi is further demanding that Adeyanju retract and delete all posts describing him as a “religious bigot,” “fraud,” “political prostitute,” “scum,” and other derogatory names.
Additionally, Obi is seeking a perpetual injunction preventing Adeyanju from making or posting any further defamatory statements about him.
He is also asking the court to grant aggravated or exemplary damages of N500 million for what he described as “reckless and malicious” defamation.
Furthermore, Obi is claiming N1 billion in general damages for the alleged harm to his reputation, humiliation, and emotional distress caused by Adeyanju’s posts and public comments.
He also wants compensation for the cost of litigation and professional fees incurred in filing the case, along with an interest of 18 per cent per annum on the judgment amount until it is fully paid by the defendant.
Adeyanju acknowledged receiving the court summons in a Facebook post last Friday.
“Finally, Peter Obi has sued me. I am actually happy and relieved that he didn’t chicken out in the end. Interestingly, he dragged me all the way to Anambra State, even though he is almost always in Abuja, where I reside.
“But no shaking, we move. I will prove in court that Peter Obi is corrupt, a bigot, and a fraud. You will all be entertained, I promise,” he stated.
The case, which has drawn significant attention on social media, is anticipated to explore the limits of free expression, defamation laws, and the extent of political criticism in Nigeria.
