Honourable Steve Oruruo has taken charge as the new acting chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State, promising to rebuild, reposition, and revitalise the party after the recent defections of Governor Peter Mbah and other key figures.

During a press briefing at the party’s secretariat in Enugu, Oruruo assured supporters and members that the PDP remains united and strong despite the current political challenges.

“The intent of this gathering is to assure the people of Enugu, nay Nigeria, that PDP is still very much alive in Enugu State,” he stated. “We’re willing at the moment to rebuild the party in the face of the current defections of Governor Peter Mbah and other elected officials of the Enugu State Government.”

Oruruo noted that his administration would work towards mobilising loyal members and keeping them committed to the ideals of the party. He said the PDP had faced similar trials in other states and remained resilient through them.

He also pledged to ensure transparent conventions and primaries that would produce credible candidates capable of earning public trust, stressing that the PDP was entering a new period of revival and growth.

“We’re creating a sense of reawakening. Even in the face of persons leaving the party, it does not amount to the capitulation of the PDP,” he said. “If credible candidates emerge from our ranks, the public will rally behind them.”

While admitting that the governor’s exit could have financial implications, Oruruo maintained that the people’s collective will and commitment would continue to define the party’s progress.

He pledged that under his leadership, the PDP in Enugu would uphold justice, fairness, and equal opportunity for all members, insisting that the party must remain independent and people-focused.

“We want to stand and create a party that will win elections. We’re building a highly independent PDP. We can’t win elections if we’re not independent,” Oruruo stated.

On the relationship between the state and national leadership, Oruruo called for increased inclusion of the Southeast in the PDP’s national structure and decision-making process.

“The Southeast must be encapsulated fully in everything that the PDP is doing at the national level,” he said. “Going forward, the Southeast must be included in all political calculations and permutations so that our people can remain resolute behind the party.”

Oruruo, a former Commissioner for Information, promised to lead with integrity, transparency, and fairness, adding that his mission was to build a stronger, more united PDP capable of winning future elections.

He concluded by reaffirming that the PDP in Enugu is “in pole position to accommodate the yearnings of our people,” as the party begins a renewed journey to reclaim its leading position in the state’s politics.
