Biodun Oyebanji.

The Governor of Ekiti State, Biodun Oyebanji, has given approval for the immediate extension of the retirement age for teachers from 60 to 65 years. Additionally, he has raised the service duration from 35 to 40 years.

The governor made this announcement on Sunday during the 2025 World Teachers’ Day event, which took place at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion in Ado-Ekiti.

As part of initiatives to acknowledge commitment and excellence within the teaching profession, Oyebanji also awarded cash prizes amounting to N46 million to distinguished teachers throughout the state.

He stated that increasing the retirement age and length of service is a deliberate step to retain seasoned professionals in the teaching workforce and to bolster the educational system in the state.

He mentioned that a dedicated committee would be established to supervise the policy’s implementation. This body will ensure that only those teachers who are both physically and mentally capable will be eligible to benefit from the new arrangement.

The governor further revealed an increase in the allowances for Science Teachers and Heads of Departments. He also confirmed that the backlog of leave bonus arrears for 2019 would be paid immediately.

“Teachers are the foundation upon which the future of our state is built. This initiative is part of our shared prosperity agenda to enhance their welfare and motivate them to continue shaping the next generation,” Oyebanji said.
