The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State has declared that despite the recent wave of defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC), it remains determined to secure victory in all the elections slated for the 2027 general polls.

It will be recalled that Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, alongside members of the State Executive Council, political appointees, and several other party members, defected to the APC last week.

However, speaking to journalists at the PDP State Secretariat on Tuesday, the Acting State Chairman, Mr Steve Oruruo, stated that the party still retains a large number of loyal members, with more individuals expressing interest in joining and contesting future elections under its platform.

Oruruo assured residents of the state that the PDP remains vibrant and resolute in Enugu, reaffirming its determination to rebuild and strengthen the party despite the governor’s defection to another political platform.

According to him, the party has begun mobilising its members to remain united, motivated, and confident in ensuring that the PDP stays strong, reawakened, and rejuvenated, emphasising that those who have defected do not signify the collapse of the party.

“This is not the only state a Governor left the party and the party remained firm. We have canvassed for credible convention and legitimate primaries with quality candidates capable of drawing support. The PDP in Enugu state is more than ever ready to join forces with every other person who are interested in partnering with the party to ensure that the party remains strong,” he said.

He further stated, “We want to also send it across to the world to know that we are unmitigated, unweaving and unalloyed in our commitment to ensuring that we stay very firm and very solid. We are undeterred, we want to recreate a party capable of winning elections, we are independent and can’t be shoved aside and we are rebuilding a party that responsible candidates will emerge from,” Oruruo reiterated.

He emphasised that the PDP is capable of regaining its strength in the state despite the recent defections, noting that the party has no intention of challenging the matter in court.

Oruruo admitted that there are minor issues within the party at the national level but assured that the PDP has the internal capacity to address and resolve them promptly.

“The party is even stronger now than ever before,” he affirmed, adding that the PDP’s resilience lies in its unity and steadfast commitment to its founding principles.
