Nigerian Police Suspend Enforcement Of Tinted Glass Permit.

The Nigeria Police Force has suspended the enforcement of the vehicle tinted glass permit, following a court order that directed the exercise to be halted.

The spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the suspension on Wednesday, October 8.

It should be recalled that the Federal High Court sitting in Warri, Delta State, issued an order last week directing the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to stop the enforcement of the tinted glass permit nationwide.

The court instructed both the police and the IGP to maintain the existing situation and to “respect judicial processes pending further proceedings in the matter”.

This interim order was made during a hearing in Suit No. FHC/WR/CS/103/2025 filed by John Aikpokpo-Martins against the IGP and the Nigeria Police Force.

During an interview aired on AIT on Wednesday, Adeh explained that the suspension of the enforcement followed the police’s official receipt of the court’s order.

She stated, “Information reaching me from the office of the PRO is that the order has been received and the enforcement of the tinted permit is now on hold pending the court’s verdict.”

Adeh noted that this directive would remain in effect until the ongoing court proceedings are concluded.

“We are waiting for the verdict. We are not against the courts, and we will continue to wait until we get a verdict,” she further stated.

Responding to public concerns over the objective of the tinted glass regulation, Adeh clarified that the policy was initially introduced to address security challenges, pointing out that certain criminal offences had been committed using vehicles with heavily tinted windows.

She explained, “The law was not made by us. We are enforcers. The policy was purely security-driven. Some criminals were using tinted vehicles to commit offences, making it difficult for law enforcement to identify suspects.”

Adeh also dismissed public claims that the initiative was intended to generate revenue for the police, clarifying that all funds associated with tinted permits are paid directly into the Federal Government’s Treasury Single Account (TSA), and not to the police.
