The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has welcomed a team from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), led by its President, Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The discussion centred on the temporary suspension of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 1991, and the reasons for the pause in enforcement.
IGP Egbetokun clarified that the enforcement was put on hold temporarily to respect the interests of Nigerians and out of regard for the NBA while awaiting the outcome of a Motion on Notice scheduled for hearing on 16th October 2025 at the Federal High Court in Warri, Delta State.
“We temporarily suspended the enforcement of the Act, pending the outcome of the hearing of the Motion on Notice,” the IGP stated.
The Force’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, explained that the visit allowed for “robust deliberations on issues of mutual concern”, which included exploring ways to improve cooperation between the police and the legal community in promoting the rule of law and enhancing public trust.
He pointed out that although no court has ordered a stop to the enforcement, the police decided to suspend it as a precaution: “The Nigeria Police Force, out of consideration for the interest of Nigerians and regard for the Nigerian Bar Association, temporarily suspended the enforcement of the Act, pending the outcome of the hearing scheduled for 16th October 2025.”
To encourage ongoing collaboration, a Police-NBA Committee has been established to improve coordination on matters related to law enforcement and the justice system.
Motorists were encouraged to take advantage of the suspension period to update their documentation and comply with the regulations that govern the use of tinted or shaded glass on vehicles in Nigeria.
IGP Egbetokun reiterated that the police remain committed to enforcing all current laws with fairness, openness, and respect for citizens' rights while continuing effective partnerships with key stakeholders in the justice sector.
