Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) has brought six criminal charges against 27-year-old Innocent Chukwuemeka Onukwume, accusing him of inciting the removal of President Bola Tinubu’s government through a military coup.
Onukwume, a resident of Umusayo Layout in Rivers State’s Oyigbo Local Government Area, reportedly made several calls for a coup in October via posts on his X account (@theagroman).
The charges, filed on November 11 at the Federal High Court in Abuja under case number FHC/ABJ/CR/610/2025, also allege that Onukwume solicited military personnel to assist in carrying out the coup.
Among the tweets attributed to him were statements such as: “Nigeria needs a coup. Get rid of APC, suspend the government, and join AES. That’s what we require now.” He is also alleged to have said: “Tinubu must go and APC must be eliminated for Nigeria to regain normalcy. If you believe votes can remove Tinubu, you’re mistaken.”
According to the DSS, these social media posts violate sections 46A(1) and 59(1) of the Criminal Code Act as well as provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2024 (as amended), and are punishable under Nigerian law.
Onukwume was arrested last month in Port Harcourt after intelligence operatives flagged his online activities as threats to national security. His trial is scheduled to begin later this week.
