96-Year-Old Woman Weeps After Being Denied Voting In Anambra.

Elizabeth Onike.

A 96-year-old woman, Mrs Elizabeth Onike, was reduced to tears on Saturday at Umudim Akasi Polling Unit 019, Agulu Ward 8, in Anaocha Local Government Area, after officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) stopped her from casting her vote in the ongoing Anambra 2025 governorship election.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the nonagenarian wept bitterly when she was informed by an INEC official that she could not participate because she lacked a valid voter card.

Mrs Onike, who has consistently voted at the same polling unit, expressed sadness over the incident, describing it as heartbreaking.

“I have been voting at this polling unit. I voted in the last election, but the INEC officials said I have no valid voter card. My children are outside the state, and none is at home with me. I am pained that I am not going to vote in this election to determine who will be my next governor,” she lamented in Igbo dialect.

Meanwhile, NAN observed that the polling unit, with 830 registered voters, recorded an impressive turnout of voters despite the incident.
