APC Candidate Pulls Out Of Osun 2026 Governorship Race.

The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Ajibola Basiru, has withdrawn from the contest for the party’s governorship ticket ahead of the 2026 election in Osun State.

His decision was announced in Osogbo on Saturday, less than three weeks before the APC primary scheduled for December 13. He made the declaration during the inauguration of Alubarika House, the secretariat of his political movement.

Basiru, who had earlier met with party leaders across wards and local government areas to discuss his ambition, told supporters in Alekuwodo that he stepped down after reviewing his responsibilities and consulting widely.

He explained that, after considering the weight of his role as the party’s National Secretary and following extensive discussions with party leaders, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, he resolved not to join the 2026 governorship race.

He, however, clarified that his withdrawal “does not translate to abandoning our shared progressive goals,” noting that it was instead a pledge to strengthen his commitment to working with party leaders and members of the Alubarika Movement to support rising political figures who will advance the Renewed Hope agenda.

Basiru added that the newly inaugurated Alubarika House would serve as a hub for meetings and empowerment programmes. He also announced a donation of N50m to support upcoming initiatives.

About 13 aspirants are still in the race for the APC ticket. Among them are former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, Bola Oyebamiji; former Senate Committee Chairman on Rules and Business, Senator Babajide Omoworare; former Deputy Governor, Senator Iyiola Omisore; and lawyer Dotun Babayemi, son of the immediate past Olufi of Gbongan.

Others include former Osun Deputy Governor, Benedict Alabi; the Chairman of Mutual Assurance Benefits, Akin Ogunbiyi; and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Kunle Adegoke.
