The number of senators representing the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the National Assembly has risen to 76 following the defection of Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, who represents Cross River North, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Senator Jarigbe, who had earlier disclosed his plan to leave the opposition party last week, made his move official on Tuesday during plenary. His defection letter was read by Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, who presided over the session.
Explaining his reason for leaving the PDP, Jarigbe attributed his decision to internal crises and divisions within the party, saying they had made it difficult to continue under its platform.
With this defection, the APC now controls 76 seats in the Senate, leaving the PDP with 25, the Labour Party with 4, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) with 2, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) with 1, and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) with 1 — making a total of 109 senators.
The latest development also means that all three senatorial seats in Cross River State are now held by members of the APC, including Senator Eteng Williams (Cross River Central) and Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong (Cross River South).
