Eruku community in Ekiti Local Government Area, Kwara State, turned into a battleground on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, when about 20 armed bandits launched an attack on a local church.
The heavily armed bandits stormed the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) located on the outskirts of town at around 6 pm during a service.
Two worshippers were reportedly killed by the gunfire before the assailants forced their way into the church and abducted several congregants, taking them to an unknown location in the nearby bush.
Gunshots rang out intermittently for over an hour, creating panic across the town as residents fled in all directions.
The attack caused travellers and locals to abandon their vehicles and homes, fleeing into the surrounding bushland to escape the assault.
Though information remains limited, eyewitnesses described a state of chaos as the gunfire continued, with fears that the bandits might advance to other parts of the town.
Eruku, known for hosting the largest yam market in Kwara State, is home to diverse ethnic groups, including Fulanis, Igalas, Beriberis, and Nupes.
The bandits reportedly struck the town twice before — once when vigilantes and hunters rescued around 40 stolen cows from a ranch, and again when 18 passengers on a bus returning from a wedding were attacked, with one passenger dying during the rescue.
Religious sites such as the Benedictine Monastery in Eruku have also suffered from earlier attacks that claimed lives.
