The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has revealed that the high-level Federal Government delegation currently in the United States, led by the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, is actively working to dispel misleading claims portraying Nigeria as a country where Christians are being persecuted.
“We are not allowing misinformation to take root. Our officials are in Washington with facts, data, and a clear explanation that there is no government-supported persecution of any religious group in Nigeria,” Idris said during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Saturday evening.
The Minister noted that the Nigerian delegation has held engagements with the US Secretary of War, members of Congress, officials of the State Department, and other key American stakeholders. They have presented verified details on the nation’s security challenges, including updates on counter-terrorism operations, inter-agency coordination, and steps taken to protect all citizens, irrespective of religion or ethnicity.
He said these meetings are essential in correcting wrong impressions that have been magnified in recent congressional debates and advocacy campaigns.
“Our mission is straightforward,” he said. “We are giving our partners the full context of the security environment, the efforts being made, and the reality that extremists have killed both Muslims and Christians. These genocide narratives are inaccurate and dangerous.”
Idris added that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu views the matter with utmost seriousness. He explained that the President has strengthened Nigeria’s internal security systems and expanded international cooperation to reinforce counter-terrorism and intelligence operations.
According to him, the work of the delegation reflects the commitment of the Tinubu administration to defend Nigeria’s reputation and ensure that foreign partners base their judgments on verified information rather than one-sided claims.
He stressed that Nigeria’s relationship with the United States remains strong and that the ongoing engagements show the openness of the Tinubu administration to dialogue, partnership, and transparency.
The Minister also disclosed that more follow-up meetings will hold in the coming days as part of a coordinated government response to false narratives circulating about Nigeria’s security situation.
Idris appealed to Nigerians to remain calm and assured the public that the government will continue to confront insecurity while also engaging the global community to ensure Nigeria is accurately represented internationally.
