A death row prisoner identified as Abba Hassan has escaped from the Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Potiskum, Yobe State.
The Yobe State Police Command confirmed the jailbreak in a statement issued on Saturday, noting that the escape occurred on October 31, 2025.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, the fugitive, who is from Maiduguri in Borno State, was awaiting execution before he broke free from custody.
He appealed to residents of Yobe and neighbouring states to stay alert and provide any information that could lead to Hassan’s capture.
“People should not try to confront or arrest him on their own. For your safety, report to the nearest police station or correctional centre,” the statement read.
The Command also shared an emergency phone number — 08038452982 — for anyone with credible information about the escapee.
SP Abdulkarim appreciated the public for their cooperation and reassured that the police, in collaboration with other security agencies, are making concerted efforts to apprehend the fugitive and ensure continued security in the state.
