Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, has condemned United States President Donald Trump over his recent comments referring to Nigeria as “a disgraced country.”
Trump had made the remark during a White House briefing, warning that the U.S. would “take decisive action” if reports of Christian killings in Nigeria continued.
Reacting in a video that went viral on Friday, Jibrin described Trump’s statement as “insulting and undiplomatic,” insisting that it undermined international relations and basic diplomatic etiquette.
“For the president of the United States to say, ‘Nigeria is a disgraced country,’ and threaten military action — that’s totally unacceptable,” Jibrin stated. “He must retract that statement and tender an apology to Nigeria.”
The Deputy Senate President argued that Trump’s comments were contrary to the principles America claims to stand for, adding that no world leader had the right to threaten another sovereign nation without following due process.
“It goes against international law. If you truly believe something is wrong, follow the right channels — go to the United Nations, seek a resolution, and act within legal bounds. To issue threats directly is un-American,” Jibrin emphasised.
Addressing a cheering crowd, he noted that Nigeria would not be intimidated by Trump’s words.
“We are not afraid to speak the truth, even to Trump himself. If he were here, I would tell him plainly that his statement was unlawful and disrespectful to Nigeria,” he said.
Jibrin urged the U.S. government to prioritise diplomacy over confrontation, stressing that mutual respect and cooperation should remain the foundation of international engagement.
