The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in the Northern Region and the FCT, Rev. John Hayab, has revealed that a parent of some of the abducted schoolchildren in Niger State, known as Mr. Anthony, has passed away after suffering a heart attack.
Rev. Hayab made the disclosure on Tuesday during an appearance on ‘Politics Today’, a programme aired on Arise Television.
It will be recalled that more than 200 pupils from a Catholic private school were kidnapped by bandits, although around 50 later escaped and were reunited with their families.
He stated, “One of the parents of the abducted children from the school died yesterday. Mr. Anthony died of a heart attack following the abduction of his 3 children.
Rev. Hayab noted that many do not fully understand the depth of suffering the parents are currently facing. He said that speaking openly about the situation is not an attack on anyone but a way of highlighting the gravity of the crisis.
He added, “The pains and trauma are still very fresh. We tried speaking with the parents today, but they were too afraid to talk. When I spoke with the church leadership about it, it was truly heartbreaking.”
He described the distress the children might be facing, stressing that their daily routines and basic needs have been completely disrupted.
“These are children who normally wake up to brush their teeth, have breakfast, then a tea break or lunch depending on the school’s system, before having dinner. These children have not slept properly for days. They haven’t followed any of these routines, and some have not even taken their bath. You can imagine what they are going through,” he said.
Rev. Hayab also pointed out that the parents are living in fear because they have no clear information about the whereabouts or condition of their children.
“Now the parents themselves cannot say exactly where they are or what is happening to them. I think there is a mix-up of information in some of these conversations,” he added.
