The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved new and reviewed road contracts worth more than N400 billion to improve Nigeria’s transportation network and boost infrastructure development.
Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, disclosed this on Thursday while addressing State House correspondents after the FEC meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
According to Umahi, a total of 11 memos were presented—nine for the review of inherited projects and two for new contracts.
He revealed that the Council approved the award of Phase Two, Section Two of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway at a cost of N43 billion. The project will fix failed sections, complete underpasses, and finish pending ramp works.
The minister also confirmed that the dualisation of the Mushin–NNPC Junction–Papa Oshodi Expressway was reviewed upward from N11 billion to N19 billion due to changes in material and construction costs.
Umahi further explained that the Council gave the green light for the construction of Section Three of the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway, covering 162.97 kilometres from Badagry through Ogun to the Oyo State border, at a cost of N3.39 billion per kilometre.
He noted that several road projects inherited from past administrations were also reviewed for funding and redesign. Among them are the Ilorin–Omu Aran–Egba Road and the Old Enugu–Onitsha Road.
The minister said the 216-kilometre Ilorin–Omu Aran–Egba Road would be executed in phases, beginning with 31 kilometres under Phase One at a cost of N43 billion, while the remaining distance would be handled later as funds become available.
On the East–West Road, Umahi said the design was upgraded to ease traffic flow and strengthen the pavement structure, with the initial N156 billion budget maintained for the dual carriageway and bridges.
He added that some state governments had already taken over federal road projects within their regions to relieve the financial burden on the federal government and fast-track delivery.
The minister announced that the Ota–Idi-Iroko Road in Ogun State was redesigned to include rigid concrete pavement and an additional bridge, increasing its cost from N38 billion to N52 billion.
He also confirmed approvals for the rehabilitation of the Jos–Turunkun–Maraban–Jama’a Road in Kaduna State for N30 billion and the reconstruction of the Ijebu–Ibu Ete–Egba–Owena Road linking Ogun and Ondo States for N53 billion.
Umahi reaffirmed the government’s dedication to adopting concrete-based road designs for durability and long-term cost savings.
“Our focus remains on delivering strong and lasting road infrastructure to promote economic growth and ease movement across the country,” he said.
