The Federal Government has refuted claims that it has banned open grazing nationwide, insisting that no such decision has been taken.
This clarification was issued in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja by the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha.
Maiha explained that the government is currently rolling out a gradual and properly planned shift from open grazing to modern ranching methods.
He also noted that Nigeria has 273 officially designated grazing reserves spanning more than 4.5 million hectares.
According to the Minister, the Federal Government is working closely with state governments to restore and develop the reserves so they can operate effectively for pastoralists and livestock industry players.
He added that the transition strategy does not impose an immediate prohibition on open grazing but seeks to offer practical alternatives that boost productivity, reduce farmer–herder disputes, and support a sustainable livestock sector.
“Pastoralists, like every other economic group, require a structured business environment. The grazing reserves provided by law are meant to serve as business premises for all livestock activities. Our responsibility is to upgrade these reserves and facilitate their proper utilisation,” he said.
The Minister urged Nigerians to dismiss false reports and rely on official government information channels for accurate policy updates.
