A University of Alabama at Birmingham football player, 20-year-old Daniel Israel Mincey, has been arrested and charged with attempted murder and first-degree assault after allegedly stabbing two teammates just hours before a scheduled match.
Mincey, who hails from Pompano Beach, Florida, was taken into custody by campus police on Saturday morning and booked into Jefferson County Jail. He remains there with bail set at $90,000.
According to court filings, Mincey is accused of attempting to intentionally kill teammate Jasire Peterson and of seriously injuring another teammate, Joshua Underwood, with a knife.
David Bigney, the lawyer representing Mincey’s family, said it is still too early to make any detailed statements, noting that the evidence is currently being reviewed.
The incident occurred inside UAB’s Football Operations Building on Saturday morning.
Both injured players were hospitalised and have since been discharged, with interim head coach Alex Mortensen confirming that they are now recovering.
“I’ve had the opportunity to sit with our injured players and their family and they are okay with me telling you that they have left the hospital and are recovering,” Mortensen said.
Mincey, who transferred to UAB from the University of Kentucky in May, has been removed from the team’s online roster.
Mortensen added that the team went ahead with its match against the University of South Florida to allow senior athletes to play their final game. He praised the players for coping through the distressing incident, noting that some chose to sit out.
