Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has authorised a comprehensive upgrade and renovation of facilities at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Nonwa-Gbam, Tai Local Government Area.
The governor announced the approval on Wednesday when the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, paid him a working visit at Government House, Port Harcourt.
Fubara described Rivers as a peaceful and welcoming state, noting that this reputation has made it a popular choice for corps members and a source of confidence for their parents.
He said Rivers people are naturally accommodating and peaceful, which explains the growing interest in the state as a deployment location.
He added that the government’s core duty is to safeguard lives, protect property, and provide essential public services, a responsibility he said his administration continues to uphold.
Fubara instructed the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Benino Anabraba, to immediately inspect the camp facilities, determine what is required, and submit a report so that work can begin without delay.
He also promised to provide office space for the NYSC’s newly created regional office and said the state may either relocate or renovate the current NYSC Secretariat, which he described as inadequate.
The governor said that although NYSC is a federal institution, the facilities directly serve the people of Rivers State, making it necessary for the state government to intervene where required.
He assured that all issues raised by the DG, including the need for expansion ahead of next year, have been acknowledged for action.
During the visit, Brigadier General Nafiu stated that 2,586 corps members are currently undergoing the 2025 Batch C orientation in Rivers State, making it the fourth most preferred posting location after Lagos, the FCT, and Oyo.
He added that 8,349 Rivers indigenes are serving across the country and noted that the services rendered by corps members save the state up to N15 billion annually if valued at full salary rates.
Nafiu thanked the governor for his support, including land provided for the State Coordinator’s residence and other assistance toward improving camp conditions.
He further requested the reconstitution of NYSC governing boards at both state and local levels and appealed for the relocation of the NYSC office currently situated in the crowded Mile 2 market area in Diobu.
The DG noted that the NYSC, which began in 1973/74 with 2,764 participants, now accommodates over 400,000 corps members nationwide. He added that more than 650,000 graduates will be eligible for mobilisation in 2026, stressing the urgent need for expanded facilities nationwide.
