Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan is stuck in Guinea-Bissau following a military coup announced on Wednesday.
Alongside hundreds of foreign observers, he has been unable to exit the country. Jonathan had arrived in Bissau ahead of the recent elections, which have been conducted but whose results have not yet been officially announced.
Many who tried to leave via the airport after the coup announcement remain trapped.
The day after both leading candidates—President Umaro Sissoco Embalo and Fernando Dias—claimed victory, a faction of military officers seized full control of the nation.
Calling themselves the “High Military Command for the Restoration of Order,” they suspended the electoral process indefinitely. They also closed all borders by land, air, and sea, and enforced a nighttime curfew.
