Federal lawmaker, Jafaru Mohammad Ali Damisa, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Tuesday when his convoy was ambushed by suspected terrorists.
The attack took place along the Lumma–Babanna road in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
Damisa, who represents Borgu and Agwara Federal Constituency, was on his way to Babanna for an official function when gunmen suddenly opened fire on his convoy.
The assailants, identified as “Lakurawa terrorists, locally referred to as bandits,” launched the attack in the afternoon, taking the security team by surprise.
Security escorts immediately engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle. Unfortunately, one soldier lost his life in the exchange of fire.
Several others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, while some of Damisa’s political supporters were also caught in the crossfire.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen fired relentlessly, riddling several vehicles with bullets.
At least “11 vandalised vehicles” were left at the scene before they were later removed.
Despite the intense shootout, Damisa escaped unhurt.
