The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has scheduled an emergency meeting to review the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) Bill. The announcement came from the union’s spokesperson, Benson Upah, on Wednesday.

The meeting’s main focus will be the NSITF bill, which recently passed its second reading in the Nigerian Senate. The NLC has firmly rejected the bill, labelling it as ill-conceived and harmful to the true mission of the NSITF.

Upah remarked, “We strongly reject the bill as it is poorly motivated, misguided, and will undermine the principles and purpose of the NSITF.”

Earlier, Nigeria’s organised private sector also criticised the bill, warning that it favours government interests over those of workers and other stakeholders.

The bill proposes to repeal the current NSITF Act and replace it with the Nigeria Social Security Trust Fund Act 2025. It was sponsored by Senator Fasuyi Cyril of the All Progressives Congress, representing Ekiti State in the 10th National Assembly.
