The Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Oji River in Enugu State, Rt Rev Ikechukwu Egbuonu, has revealed fresh concerns raised by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, during his visit to the Sokoto Correctional Facility.
In an interview with AIT, Bishop Egbuonu said Kanu complained about his heart condition. He also expressed worry that the long distance between Abuja and Sokoto could hinder his ability to properly pursue his appeal.
Despite this, the Bishop noted that Kanu appeared calm and collected during their meeting.
According to him, Kanu explained that he needed to be in Abuja to update his records with the High Court before proceeding with his appeal, stressing that he has only a 90-day window to complete the process.
The Bishop said Kanu was displeased because no instruction had been issued for his transfer to Abuja to handle the matter and return afterwards.
He added that he also overheard Kanu trying to speak with his lawyer regarding an issue the lawyer raised about a misunderstanding linked to a document Kanu had prepared for filing.
“He is unhappy that he cannot communicate freely with his lawyers,” the Bishop said.
Responding to claims that Kanu had dismissed his legal team, Bishop Egbuonu clarified that this was untrue.
He explained that Kanu chose to conduct his own defence while retaining his lawyers as consultants to guide him, noting that the legal team was still active, as one of the lawyers accompanied him during the visit.
