Labour Party presidential hopeful Peter Obi has condemned the federal government for the Super Eagles’ reported training boycott ahead of the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff against Gabon.
In a message on X (formerly Twitter), Obi expressed frustration that Nigerian players who consistently serve the country have yet to receive their allowances.
“It’s regrettable that our Super Eagles, who always put Nigeria first, are still owed their payments,” he stated.
Obi highlighted the government’s habit of spending on unnecessary luxury and political patronage while failing to pay those who proudly represent Nigeria.
The former Anambra governor described the situation as shameful, warning it sends a negative message to young Nigerians about the value of hard work and patriotism.
He called on officials to resolve the issue quickly and ensure athletes are treated with dignity and fairness.
“When those who represent the nation are not respected or paid on time, it discourages the youth. We must do better,” Obi said.
Nigeria’s World Cup build-up hit a snag on Tuesday when the entire Super Eagles team and staff boycotted training in Rabat, Morocco, due to unpaid bonuses and allowances.
Reports link the protest to unsettled financial issues with football authorities.
This standoff comes just two days before Nigeria’s important semi-final clash with Gabon at the Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan Stadium, a key step toward qualification for the 2026 World Cup in North America.
