The Department of State Services (DSS) has invited Peter Obi's running mate and founder of Baze University, Abuja, Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed for questioning over what officials describe as remarks capable of inciting tension and undermining national stability, Zagazola Media reports.
According to the report, a top security source confirmed the development, noting that the agency’s move followed “growing concerns over Baba-Ahmed’s recent public statements across major media platforms, particularly his repeated claims of a looming constitutional crisis.”
According to the source, Baba-Ahmed’s latest media appearance triggered heightened scrutiny.
“A few days ago, Baba-Ahmed was on national television blaming the judiciary and the military for allowing the swearing-in of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima. He even went to the length of inciting the military, saying it was President Tinubu’s swearing-in that made it possible for them to look you in the face and call you ‘bloody fools.’”
Security officials reportedly viewed these remarks as inflammatory, especially given the delicate political atmosphere.
The source expressed concern that “his comments carry undertones capable of heightening national tension, particularly given the sensitivity of Nigeria’s current political climate. It is also disturbing considering how similar narratives have contributed to instability in countries like Guinea-Bissau and other states.”
He added that the DSS invitation was issued strictly on security grounds and not political motivations.
“I believe the secret police is treating his comments with caution. It has nothing to do with politics, but the corporate existence of our nation could be threatened if such rhetoric is allowed to fester,” he said.
Baba-Ahmed had also criticised Nigeria’s judicial and military institutions, accusing them of “complacency” for not stopping the inauguration of President Tinubu—a statement security analysts believe could provoke disaffection within state institutions.
The source further explained that the DSS is acting within established protocol.
“Such an invitation aligns with established procedures, especially as his description of efforts to improve the security of the nation as a ‘joke’ could agitate public sentiment and weaken trust in state institutions.”
He clarified that the interaction with the DSS would not be punitive but aimed at prevention.
“These sessions are not punitive; they are preventive, focused on clarifying intent, contextualizing remarks, and preventing the emergence of narratives that could unintentionally fuel unrest,” the source said.
