The Edo State Police Command has detained Osarobo Omoyemen, a social media influencer known as Madam Oil Rice, over a fabricated kidnapping story she shared online.
According to the police spokesperson, Moses Yamu, Omoyemen claimed she was abducted along Upper Sakponba Road in Benin City and later rescued by police officers who allegedly held her at Akpata Police Station and demanded N10,000 as bail.
After an investigation, the police found that the entire story was deliberately invented.
The statement said:
“The Edo State Police Command wishes to inform the public that Osarobo Omoyemen, popularly called ‘Madam Oil Rice,’ spread a false kidnapping narrative on social media.
“Our inquiry revealed the claim was staged intentionally. Upon questioning, the 24-year-old admitted she created the story to generate content and attract followers on TikTok.”
Yamu pointed out that the false claim could cause distrust against the police and stir unrest in Edo State.
He also revealed that other people who helped create the content would be identified and held responsible.
“It was uncovered that she deleted a previous video where an accomplice encouraged viewers to follow her page, exposing their motive,” he said.
Omoyemen has been arrested and charged in court as of November 20, 2025. The police are working to apprehend her collaborators.
“This move aims to deter anyone from using social media to spread falsehoods or cause panic,” Yamu added.
He warned the public to confirm information before sharing and urged against actions that could disrupt public peace.
The police remain committed to maintaining security and peace throughout Edo State.
