The Niger State Police Command has dispatched a specialised tactical team to secure the release of students kidnapped from St. Mary’s Private Secondary School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area.
Police spokesperson SP Wasiu Abiodun disclosed in a statement from Minna on Friday that the attack took place around 2 a.m., when armed bandits invaded the school hostel and took the students away.
He stated that police tactical operatives, working alongside the military and other security agencies, have moved into the area and are actively searching the surrounding forests to locate the victims.
According to him, the Commissioner of Police, Adamu Elleman, has assured the public that the command is committed to ensuring the safe recovery of the kidnapped students.
Residents were urged to stay calm and support the ongoing security operations.
Abiodun also warned that appropriate action would be taken against the school management for allegedly ignoring a state government directive that ordered the closure of schools in the area due to ongoing security threats.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that gunmen invaded the school and abducted an unspecified number of students and staff.
A resident of Agwara, who requested anonymity, told NAN that the school is situated about eight kilometres from Agwara town along the Agwara-Borgu Road.
