The Borno State Police Command has rescued one of the girls abducted by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP insurgents and has stepped up operations to secure the release of the remaining 13.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday in Maiduguri by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso.
He said the abduction took place on 22 November at about 3:30 p.m.
According to him, the command received a report from the District Head of Huyum indicating that 14 girls from Mussa District had been seized by armed insurgents while working on a farmland.
He explained that a combined team comprising police operatives, troops of the Nigerian military, Civilian JTF and vigilantes immediately began a search-and-rescue mission in the area.
Daso confirmed that during the operation, one of the abducted girls escaped without injury and was rescued by security personnel. He said efforts were ongoing to recover the remaining 13.
The statement also quoted the Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, urging residents to remain alert and cooperate with security agencies as coordinated operations continue.
While advising farmers and rural communities to operate within areas covered by security patrols and to maintain heightened vigilance, Abdulmajid assured the public that further information would be provided as the mission progresses.
